The Brick Lane 1978 project continues through lockdown
Despite the restrictions of Covid-19, our dedicated Brick Lane 1978 project volunteers have continued to investigate the context of racism in Britain in the 1970s. So far, our research has looked closely at contemporary press coverage, experiences of Bengali garment workers, housing and the Rock against Racism movement. We've drawn many parallels with politics today.
We have been on socially-distanced local history walks, presented our research online, identified over 80 people in Paul Trevor's photographs, and interviewed activists Jalal Rajonuddin, Sunahwar Ali, Dan Jones, Farrukh Dhondy, Balwinder Rana, Ayub Korom Ali and Nooruddin Ahmed, with many more to come.
Photographer Paul Trevor presents his photographs of the Brick Lane protests to our project volunteers over Zoom.
