In the run up to the 5th annual Sao Paulo Fotoweek, August's Photoforum event extends the invitation for lively debate beyond the walls of the Four Corners gallery, to discuss the work of Brazilian photographers based in London and Sao Paulo.
Bringing the work of established Artists Rochelle Costi and Rosângela Rennó together with that of emerging London based Brazilian Photographers Leticia Valverdes, Andre Penteado and Camila Trajber, the event will form part of a wider conversation spanning the two cities. Those familiar with Photoforum will know it as an evening characterised by the breadth of it's audience. August's special event continues in this spirit, as ideas and responses from artists and audience recorded on the night travel on to Sao Paulo, re-starting the discussion as it expands to involve an extended audience the following week.
Though coming to the forum with diverse approaches, the work of those invited finds common ground as it encounters questions of authorship. Whether working collectively, with found or appropriated imagery or in collaboration with a subject, the growing number of ways in which an image may come to be, and be seen, increasingly challenges assumptions about the photographer as author.
As the artists discuss their work in relation to these issues, Brazilian curator Kiki Mazuchelli will lend another perspective to the conversation, drawing in ideas about the particular nature of authorship within the Brazilian context.
